Private Residential Cottage · Cognashene, Georgian Bay, ON · c. 2018
Built on a wind-swept granite point in Cognashene, the cottage anchors itself with a stone chimney and lets exposed Douglas-fir rafters reach out past the glass to shade the terrace. A flagstone patio steps directly onto the Shield, and the main room opens fully to the channel and the open water beyond.
The design arrived at its timber-and-stone character over time. The 2017 renderings below show an earlier, more sharply modern direction — worth seeing alongside what was finally built.
Stone chimney, exposed Douglas-fir rafters, and a long band of glass facing the water. The flagstone terrace and fire pit sit right on the granite, with the flag and the open channel beyond.
The cottage began as a sleeker, metal-clad scheme of linked glass pavilions on the same granite point. These 2017 renderings show that original direction before the design evolved toward the timber-and-stone cottage that was built.
